KARACHI: In a crackdown on profiteers, 216 shopkeepers were charged with Rs 287600 fine for selling commodities above government rates, while two others were jailed.
Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fixed rates.
He further said that city administration had focused those areas where complaints against price hike were received. These areas included Saddar, Garden, SITE, Baldia, Orangi, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Model Colony, Bin Qasim and Korangi.
In the crackdown, 77 milkmen, 38 shopkeepers of general commodities, 33 chicken sellers, two meat sellers, 35 vegetable sellers, 30 fruit sellers and a flour seller were fined for selling essential items at excessive prices, while two persons were sent to jail for continuous violation of official rates.
