KARACHI: Despite global efforts to curb the hunger and malnourishment in the world, the figures are continuously climbing. About 795 million people are undernourished globally, (FAO 2015). In spite of positive economic indicators heralded by many countries in Asia, the region is home to the most number of hungry people with 578 million (FAO Hunger Report 2011) with women and children as the most vulnerable.
Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) in the continuation of its struggle is going to celebrate the ‘Week of Action’ to mark the “World Food Day”. The Week of Action will begin in Karachi with a colourful event, followed by simultaneous activities throughout Sindh. Small-scale food producers like fishermen, farmers/peasants and other work workforce, including women will participate in the rallies, short marches, seminars and food festivals to express solidarity with the international communities, while stressing the Sindh government to ensure right to food for each citizen.
PFF in the continuation of its campaign for right to food is going to organize a Provincial Dialogue to mark the World Food Day to mobilize Communities to resist the ‘corporate capture’ and put forward the agenda for policy development and institutional set-up at provincial / national level for Secure & Sustainable Social Protection and Food Sovereignty.
