Construction of 200 public toilets initiated

KARACHI: On the directives of Sindh High Court, the Commissioner Karachi office took an initiative to inaugurate a public toilet for media men in its vicinity. More than 200 new toilets will be constructed in the government offices for general public.

The importance of public toilets in the society could be determined by the fact that women have to face big problem while they are in need and prime minister of the neighbouring country Narendra Modi in his monumental speech on their Independence Day had addressed the issue of lack of public toilets, as defecation in open has been deemed to be one of the other reasons of string of rape cases in India.

Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui said that new public toilets would be constructed for the relief of common men in government offices at different locations in the city and old toilets would be renovated. K-Electric and Karachi Water & Sewerage Board would provide free of cost electricity and water to these toilets.

“Keeping in view need of common men and commuters, on the directives of SHC and government, more than 200 public toilets would be built across the city,” he said this while inaugurating the new toilet at his office.

Director Local Government Robina Asif, Director Planning and Development Commissioner Office Syed Muhammad Shakib and media representatives were also present.

Siddiqui said that this was the first time when toilet was specially made for journalists in the history of the commissioner house for their convenience as journalists visited the office every now and then.

The toilet for journalists, which was made on the request of public relation officer Shabih Siddiqui, is in the next corner of the commissioner house where public relation office is located.

The commissioner said that 10 new public toilets would be erected in New Sabzi Mandi. These toilets would be constructed and maintained by Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).

Siddiqui also directed all the relevant organizations to ensure construction of public toilets as well as ramp for old and disabled people while passing maps for commercial buildings.

“We do not have a culture of establishing toilet in our society which is a basic need of every human. Toilets should not be just set up in Karachi but all over the country, at crowded places,” he said.
