Karachi: In a high level meeting held at Pakistan National Shipping Corporation Head Office Karachi Thursday in which government stakeholders including Secretary Ports & Shipping, Commander Karachi (Pak Navy), DG Ports & Shipping, Chairman PNSC, Chairman KPT, Chairman PQA as well as officials from Immigration, FIA, Customs, Anti Narcotics and entrepreneurs from private sector attended the meeting. Representatives of all provinces have shown presence and shared their views on the occasion.
The Federal Minister for Ports & Shipping Senator Kamran Michael while chairing the meeting informed that two passenger ferries have been short listed for operations between Karachi to Chahbahar and Karachi to Ormara/Gawadar. He further informed that the ferry service will reduce the cost of journey for Zaireen and would be a safe and secure alternate to road. He added that around 250 to 400 passenger’s capacity ferry with speed of 28-30 Knots per hour would reach Chahbahar (Iran) in 14 hours. The Federal Minister announced that this ferry service will operate under the name of Makran Ferry Service Company Limited.
The Minister stated that this subject ferry service additionally will provide cargo service between Karachi and Gawadar. This will improve the overall shipping industry of Pakistan, an important segment on which trade of nation largely depends. Suggestions and recommendations were put across and the meeting concluded with an announcement of formation of Makran Ferry Service Company Limited subject to policy approval of the Inter-ministerial meeting to be convened soon in Islamabad by Federal Minister Ports & Shipping.
