First polio case in Balochistan

QUETTA: A new case of crippling poliovirus was confirmed in an 18-month-old boy in Mehmoodabad area of Chaman district Killa Abdullah on Wednesday, the first polio case reported form Balochistan and the 3rd in Pakistan during 2017.

According to the Health Department Sources the child is identified as Ahmed Shah s/o Agha Shah resident of Mohalla Rah Mohammad in Mehmoodabad area of Chaman district of Killa Abdullah. The mother and the grandmother of the baby refused to vaccinate the,” official sources said and added that he hardly received 2 to 3 doses of polio vaccine. According to the sources Southern Afghanistan and Quetta Block is an active region for virus transmission in the world.

According to the parents, the child developed high fever along with constipation. He was first taken to a local dispensary and was later brought to the area’s Children hospital where he was suspected of being a victim of polio virus. It was only after testing the stool samples of the child and other medical investigations that the child was confirmed to be a victim of polio virus, added the officials. According to the sources next polio campaign in the area is scheduled from 24th of July.
