Govt asked to solve problems of white cane people

KARACHI: Karachi Association for the Welfare of the Special Persons’ General Secretary Zubair Ahmed Siddiqui said on Thursday that the blind people or white cane persons need special attention to resolve their basic problems.

Addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club (KPC) on the eve of World Blind Day or White Cane Safety Day celebrated all over the world, he said the day is celebrated every year on October 15 to highlight blind and visually impaired people’s achievements and to remind people how white cane people can play an important role in helping the blind and the visually impaired lives with greater independence.

He said unfortunately in Pakistan, neither federal government nor provincial government of Sindh seemed to organize a single event regarding the day to show sympathy with blind people what he called “weak sector of society” on any level.

He said this ignorance proves the negligence of both governments in resolving the basic issues of white cane persons, pending for years.

He said according to a survey conducted by their organization, in Pakistan out of 21 million blind people 17 to 21 thousand blind people live in Karachi.

Siddiqui said that most of the countries conduct survey to find out the ratio of disabled and blind people s to set criteria for jobs provision and other necessary facilities for such affected persons but in Pakistan this tradition does not exist.

He demanded that the government should form a committee to compel institutions to act upon the constitutional rights the blinds regarding their 2% job quota, special education of blinds, and so on.
