KARACHI: International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK) has setup a research institute in the name of famous Pakistan-friendly German scientist, Prof. Wolfgang Voelter.
This was stated by Director ICCBS-UoK Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary while talking to a delegation of scientists at HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi (UoK) on Tuesday.
He said that Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, former Chairman Higher Education Commission, was in Germany where he would deliver an invited lecture in the honour of Prof. Wolfgang Voelter on the invitation of Tübingen University. The University is honouring Prof. Voelter with the Tübingen University Award 2015 in recognition of his outstanding services. Prof. Voelter made major contributions in the promotion of science and technology in Pakistan.
“Prof. Voelter strongly recommended a generous German financial support (2.3 million DM, later enhanced to 5.8 million DM) to our institute (Postgraduate Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi), paving the way to a major institutional development,” he said.
The chemical and biochemical institute has already been setup in the premises of ICCBS at a cost of Rs.63.38 million.
He said that the commitment and services of Prof. Voelter for the academia of Pakistan would always be remembered.
Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, in his message, said that Prof. Voelter was one such man who had left an indelible mark on science in Pakistan and in many other developing countries including China, Jordan, Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece and others.
The students who worked with him had their lives changed in miraculous ways, he added.
