Karachi: The revival of the abandoned project of Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) is an urgent need of Karachi and the Pakistan railways should immediately resume local train service on main rail track from City Station to Landhi to facilitate Karachiites, demands Karachi commuters’ rights campaign (KCRC).
The KCR has been in limbo for two decades and successive governments have ignored this lifeline of public transport in the largest city of Pakistan. The KCR loop has been deliberately damaged, allowing thieves to steal tracks and signal wires, and political mafias to encroach the land. However, the main upcountry track is still intact and local trains could be run from City Station to Landhi anytime without difficulty.
Pakistan railways are running local trains in Lahore and there is no harm in giving the neglected citizens of orphaned city Karachi such facility. The Pakistan Railways should also take the responsibility to repair and revive the KCR without waiting for Japanese, Chinese or some other foreign loan.
KCRC requests the elected representatives of Karachi to take this issue through resolutions, call attention notices and adjournment motions in both National Assembly and Sindh Assembly. The elected members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) are presently in better position to raise this burning issue of the Karachi voters and hence play their important role in giving some solace to the political orphaned city of Karachi.
