ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Chairman Steering Committee and MDGs Sheikh Aftab Ahmed has said that as a result of personal interest of Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif, an amount of Rs. 12.5 billion has been released for the Community Development Programme to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
This amount, he said, will be utilized solely for the betterment and welfare of the masses. He said this while chairing Steering Committee’s 2nd meeting on PAK MDGs Community Development Programme here on Wednesday.
He said that all resources will be used for the welfare of masses especially for the uplift and betterment those people who are living in far flung areas of the country. He said as per the directions of the Prime Minister, funds will be given to the all constituencies to provide relief to the masses.
The minister said that the said amount would be spent during two fiscal years i.e. from 2014 to 2016 and will be utilized for Education, Health, Roads, Sewerage, Power, Sui Gas and provision of hygienic water projects. He said that notables of every constituency will be involved in this programme to ensure maximum participation and effectiveness. He said the funds would be utilized in a transparent manner and through a proper system of checks and balances.
Directing the concerned authorities to ensure timely completion of the projects, the minister stressed that the project initiated by the previous governments should be completed on priority. Any issue regarding availability of funds or other problem should immediately be brought to attention, he continued.
He said there will be no compromise on quality and quantity and the contracts will be awarded to only those contractors who meet these requirements. The Minister said that this was public money and therefore should be spent on their welfare with utmost care and responsibility.
He directed all concerned to ensure speedy work on these project and desired that he should be kept informed about the progress of these ongoing development projects on regular basis. It was decided during the meeting that the committee members will visit the sites of the development projects from time to time.
Former parliamentarian Saud Majeed, Secretary Cabinet, JS Cabinet, representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Petroleum and Natural Resources, Water and Power, Housing and Works, Parliamentary Affairs and all the four provinces and FATA were also present during the meeting.
