Only knowledgeable society could rescue Pakistan


KARACHI: Former Vice Chancellor University of Karachi Prof Dr Peerzada Qasim Siddiqui said on Thursday that nothing could rescue Pakistan but a knowledge-based society that can be developed through higher education institutes.

“KU is a prized and prominent university among all the universities in our country and researches of the Pharmacy department are comparable to the researches of any other big university in the country and abroad,” he said.

The former VC said this while addressing the ceremony “Golden Jubilee Celebration of Pharmacy 1964-2014” after completion of 50 years of the department of Pharmacy in KU.

Siddiqui, who has served the university for almost nine years as a vice chancellor only, lauded the deep loyalty of the teachers who had yet brought up hundreds and thousands of Pharmacists in the country.

Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan informed the gathering that a bill regarding appointments of Pharmacists in government organizations had been unanimously passed from the senate and would be submitted to National Assembly on 6th Sept that would uplift the status of Pharmacists.

He said that visiting and serving a university like KU was worship for him.

Chairman Hilton Pharma Group of Companies Sardar M Yasin Malik, the chief guest of the event, said that because of Pharmacists we could ourselves produce some drugs, however, the number of Pharmacists specially adept ones was still lower than needed. Malik said Pharmacists had a bright future and they were in much demand abroad as well.

Former VC KU and dean of Faculty of Pharmacy Zafar Saeed Saifi, also first teacher of the department, narrated the story of his life that how difficultly they studied at KU when there was almost no facility and the same situation had to be faced when he had to serve the university after graduating in Biochemistry. He said that the determination and dedication had handed him fruit for life-time.

Spokesman for VC KU Prof Dr Abid Azher said that Pharmacists might not be considered to be high-ranking among masses, but with their hard-working and efforts they could take their department to heights.

The event was followed by a book launching ceremony by Dean Faculty of Pharmacy Prof Dr Ghazala Hafeez Rizwani on the topic of Standardization of Medicinal Herbs of Pakistan. A monthly magazine was also launched by the faculty at the occasion.

While, the program was going on in the auditorium of the department most of the students were enjoying outside across the road where two camps were set up by the department one was fun-gala, where several games, creative things and fast food was available, and in the other camp different doctors and physicians were doing free of cost medical check-ups.

The faculty alone has yet produced 98 Ph.Ds, 210 M.Phils and 260 M.Pharm which is the largest figure from any Pharmacy department of universities in the country. Moreover, 1200 research papers have been published in national and international journals by the faculty. Presently, above 1800 students there are pursuing studies leading to D-Pharm, M-Pharm, M-Phil and Ph.D.
