KARACHI: The newly formed public accounts committee on Tuesday held its second session at Sindh assembly building to overview Rs44,244,081 irregularities in the audit report of the Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) Khairpur.
The meeting was called by committee’s chairman MPA Saleem Raza Jalbani to overview the auditor general’s report 2009-10 for the year 2008-09.
Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Miandad Zardari and other university officials represented the university in the meeting.
The meeting expressed annoyance over non-presence of SALU Vice Chancellor Parveen Shah, who was on a foreign tour, despite being notified of the meeting more than a week ago.
The meeting agreed to send a show-cause notice to the vice-chancellor over her absence and said that it would also convey a letter to Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah regarding the irresponsible behavior of the vice chancellor Parveen Shah.
The audit report for financial year 2009-10 was presented before the public accounts committee consisted of eight paragraphs, showing discrepancies in funds released to the university.
The report revealed discrepancies of Rs 2,400,000 in purchase of generators, payment of Rs 5,928,000 in terms of medical allowances of Rs2000 per month to BS-17 and above, non-adjustment of advances against employees amounting to Rs 805,300, excess payment of Rs 13,518,000 to non-gazetted employees in terms of medical allowances, irregular payments of electricity charges to varsity’s colony amounting to Rs 4,201,223, payments of Rs 3,081,211 in terms of gas charges, payment of Rs 14,202,804 in terms of conveyance allowance and Rs 117,543 over execution of extra item of works.
Examining the SU’s audit report for the financial year 2009-10, the PAC expressed annoyance over the university officials’ unpreparedness while presenting the audit report at the meeting despite being given suitable time for this purpose.
The varsity officials asked the committee members to give more time to submit their report on which the committee members directed them to submit SALU report within the first week of June.
