Pakistan, Afghanistan agree to make joint efforts to curb terrorism

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Afghanistan have reiterated the resolve to make joint efforts to eliminate terrorism and extremism from the region.

The resolve came at a joint statement issued at the conclusion of two-day Pak-Afghan parliamentarians’ dialogue here on Wednesday.

The joint statement stated that strong and viable bilateral relationship is the guarantee of the security, peace and development in the region.

The Parliamentarians unequivocally condemned the recent heinous and inhuman terrorist attack in Peshawar. Similar dastardly terrorist attacks in Kabul and Paktika province were also deplored.

Parliamentarians reiterated the resolve to eliminate all kinds of terrorism and extremism affecting the two countries. Participants of the dialogue appreciated Pak-Afghan joint efforts to counter terrorism and extremism to establish peace and stability in the region.

They underscored the need for bilateral cooperation, particularly cooperation among the states and security Agencies of two countries. Both the sides also called for comprehensive and effective laws on combating terrorism, including cyber terrorism.

The parliamentarians stressed that trade and commerce between the two countries must be prioritized and formalized. Both sides also supported removal of bottlenecks and trade barriers and emphasised that facilities for transit trade between the two neighbouring countries must be improved.

The two sides also supported the initiatives to enhance connectivity between Pakistan and Afghanistan, including through a motorway between Peshawar and Kabul, rail and road links between Parachinar and Kabul, Peshawar and Jalalabad and Chaman and Spin Boldak as well as building a trade central strategic corridor between the two countries.

The parliamentarians also favored de-weaponization and improved drug management across the border. They stressed on putting in place a relaxed visa regime that allows multiple entry visas of citizens of each country.
