Peshawar: Provincial Disaster Management Authority- PDMA observed the National Disasters Awareness Day expressing solidarity with victims of the October 8 earthquake. PDMA organized a program here in Government High School No.1 City, Peshawar. Participants from Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, Students and Teacher attended the special day program.
While talking on the occasion, Dr. Azmat Wazir, Director Relief PDMA said, in 2005 earthquake, northern part of the province badly affected. Muzaffarabad was the hardest hit, mainly because the epicentre of earthquake was just 19 kilometres (12 miles) to its northeast.
He said, PDMA, Rescue 1122 and Civil Defence is observing this day in the memory of the martyrs of the devastating quake which left over 74 thousand people dead and million others injured in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
He said, PDMA has recently established Disaster Risk Management-DRM Strategic Unit, which will work on risk assessment studies, surveys, capacity building and Advocacy.
Provincial Disaster Management Authority also firmly intends to involve all stakeholders, particularly organizations with extensive experience in Disaster Risk Management to make Disaster Resilient Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he added.
At the occasion, officials from Rescue 1122 and Civil Defence also performed “Special Rescue & Relief” operations for the awareness of Students.
