ISLAMABAD: National Child Health Consortium (NCHC) on Monday strongly condemned the reported killing of a polio worker in Bajour Agency, FATA and urged the government to provide fool proof security to polio teams and all associated with the program.
As per the media reports, a supervisor of anti polio drive was targeted and killed in the Khar tehsil of Bajaur Agency, that has highlighted once again the threat for polio workers face in their efforts to eradicate the disease.
A statement issued from the NCHC secretariat said that Members of the NCHC have insisted the officials to investigate the case and book the culprits so the morale of team members remain high.
The official data shows that from December 2012 onwards more than 80 polio team members have been martyred while over 50 members have been injured in different security incidents across the country. In FATA alone over 20 workers have become victims of such attacks.
Convener, NCHC Wajih Akhtar expressed that society ownership and public trust can improve current state of affairs while government should also take steps on emergency basis to provide security to polio teams who are out in the field to protect the future of Pakistan.
