School kids be given civil defence training: commissioner


KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoiab Ahmed Siddiqui has directed all the deputy commissioners and heads of civil defence department of all the districts for making department of civil defence active and alive so that early preparations could be made to escape safely from any disaster or incident of terrorism.

He said this while addressing an emergency meeting in this regard at his office. It was decided in the meeting that all the DCs should immediately take actions in their relevant districts and make emergency community plan in order to get ready against any natural disaster or act of terrorism. The people should be given training to safeguard communities.

Siddiqui said the department of civil defence was fully capable of helping in any kind of emergency situation with the help of the already present trained volunteers of the organization. They just needed to be given training on modern basis to make them dynamic.

The meeting decided that Pakistan International Airline would help in organizing events for providing training in the same way it is organized in Europe and other developed countries. The meeting decided that the teams of civil defence would be unified for devising emergency community plan.

The meeting also reviewed steps for guiding and security of the people who visited beaches for recreational activities and decided that four watch towers should be set up in the next month for this purpose in cooperation with Citizens Council for Human Rights. The four watch towers would be linked with an emergency center that would be built in their center.

“Keeping in view the Peshawar incident, school children and students of other educational institutes would also be given civil defence training so that they could themselves learn to tackle the emergency situation,” the commissioner said.

He said DCs in cooperation with different organizations would use advertising methods for spreading awareness regarding safety in an emergency situation. K-Electric, Karachi Water & Sewerage Board, Sui Southern Gas Company, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and other organizations would publish the awareness messages in their bills.

Representatives of Provincial Disaster Management Authority, Federal Civil Defence Training School, director civil defence, Sindh Boys Scouts Association, DHA, KMC, Sindh Buildings Control and Authority and other people were also present on the occasion.
