Singapore Zoo contacted to improve Karachi zoos: commissioner


KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui on Monday said Singapore Zoo had been contacted to make Karachi Zoo advanced and improved.

“The relevant officers have presented study tour report and under its light it has been decided that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) would establish research and development department to improve Safari Park and Karachi Zoo on modern scales so that the zoo could be made better through advises and cooperation of experts,” he said while chairing a meeting at Karachi Zoo.

The meeting decided to celebrate zoo week from 6th September in which development of Karachi Zoo and Safari Park, increasing people’s interest in zoo and awareness about animals would be highlighted.

“Different events will be organized on the occasion of zoo week including paying tribute to martyrs of 6th September, Pakistan Defence Day,” the meeting decided.

Commissioner Karachi said zoo would be upgraded to make it a recreational place of international standard. Singapore zoo had offered training the staff of Karachi Zoo which has been consented. The relevant department had been directed to proceed in this regard. Soon the staff would be sent to Singapore to upgrade their skills.

Siddiqui said being administrator KMC he had given approval for spending money generated through Karachi Zoo and Safari Park not to be spent elsewhere.

It was decided that Senior Director Culture and Recreation KMC Raza Abbas Rizvi and member of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Faisal Mukhtar would be joint in charge of the zoo fund.

The meeting expressed astonishment over desertion and sitting idle of animal care hospital. The commissioner Karachi directed to immediately activate the hospital so that animals could be better taken care of.

Director Local Government Rubina Asif, consultant KMC Capt Faheem Baig, Prof M Zaheer, officers of World Wide Fund and Sindh Wild Life and representatives of KCCI were also present on the occasion.
