Karachi: National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) clinched the inaugural Chief of the Army Staff Challenge Hockey Cup after beating Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) by 2-0 score in the summit clash on Sunday at Army Hockey Stadium in Rawalpindi.
NBP took the command of the final match early in the first quarter after skipper Mohammad Tousiq converted a penalty corner successfully and Shan Irshad netted a field goal to consolidate his teams’ position.
After conceding two goals, PIA forwards showed some aggression in their attacks but failed to change their fate as NBP maintained the lead in remaining part of the match.
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif appreciated the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) President Akhtar Rasool Chaudhry and Secretary General Rana Mujahid Ali for going all out to revive Pakistan’s past glory in world hockey.
Gen Raheel watched the final match and vowed to support hockey which he said was a national duty. He said our players had brought laurels for the country winning a silver medal in the Champions Trophy which was not a small performance. “They deserved to be looked after well”, he said.
