Karachi: Experienced striker Shakeel Abbasi failed to make it to the preliminary squad as the Pakistan Hockey Federation PHF made changes in bulk while announcing 27 probables for upcoming tournaments.
Pakistan will take part in International Super Series in Australia next month before taking part at the Asian Champions Trophy in Japan in November.
The training camp for the events will be staged at in Lahore from September 27.
Tahir Zaman will be the camp commandant and will supervise the training. He is also expected to be named as team’s manager cum coach after Akhtar Rasool’s resignation on Tuesday.
Apart from Abbasi, goalie Salman Akbar and Waqas Sharif are among the various who have been overlooked after greenshirts’ Hockey World League and Asia Cup debacle and subsequently failing to make the cut for World Cup 2014.
However, captain Mohammad Imran managed to get a place in the squad.
Seasoned Waseem Ahmed is also not the part of squad as the former captain has informed the PHF about his retirement plan, said a PHF official.
Several Olympian called for overhaul in the team after it failed to qualify for the World Cup 2014. The side missed two chances of qualifying for the global event – the Hockey World League and the Asia Cup in which they stood third instead of a gold medal.
