KARACHI: A five-member committee has been formed to make the reconstructed Shahabuddin Market Saddar operational which would submit its report within three days so that immediate marketing of this project could be initiated.
This was decided in a meeting chaired by Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhtar Farooqui and attended by Sr Director Transport & Communication Muhammad Ather, Sr Director Finance Farhan Durrani, Director Finance KDA Wing Syed Qaiser Imam, Director PTM Qazi Abdul Qadir, Director Public Housing Sabah-ul-Islam, Director Estate Muneer Ali, Superintendent Engineer Naveed Izhar and other officers.
Administrator Karachi on this occasion said that besides giving shops to allotees, remaining shops of Shahabuddin Market would be allotted through auction or draw commercially. Phase-I of the project would incur Rs 800 million which include construction of market and five-story car parking plaza where parking facility for a good number of vehicles would be available.
After completion of initial phase of the project, shops would be shifted on lower ground floor gradually whereas 131 shops were constructed on ground floor. He said that 157 shops have been constructed on mezzanine floor and 157 shops on first floor. Twelve to 18 foot-wide corridors were also constructed in market and this facility was not available in any other market so far whereas five stories were allocated for car parking where 600 vehicles along with hundreds of motorcycles could be parked at a time.
He said that KMC provides citizens with facilities, therefore, it should be considered while making projects for the city that maximum people could be provided with facilities. He said that KMC was also implementing a comprehensive traffic management plan for this busy area. He directed officers to specially concentrate on materials being used in construction work of Shahabuddin Market and Parking Plaza.
He informed that 438 shops and stalls were temporarily shifted in front of car parking plaza Saddar in 2009 to resolve parking problem in Empress Market and surrounding area so that development work could be started around Empress Market and this area could be made beautiful. This project holds much importance for this area which should be completed as soon as possible and Car Parking Plaza would have more importance after declaring Saddar traffic free zone.
