Peshawar: The Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak has stressed the need of undertaking mega projects for the development of the province with special focus on the provincial metropolis Peshawar in order to restore its glorious past, and has admitted that there was a dire need of paying heed to the residential issues on priority basis and to initiate mega residential schemes to resolve it because the existing road infrastructure and bazaars inside our
cities have become too congested and narrow to cater the needs of the ever increasing population. Issues like traffic jam for hours and security of the citizens have become common in all of our cities that unfortunately could not be addressed in past.
He directed the authorities to chalk out new mega housing schemes as well as expedite work on the ongoing schemes. He stressed the need of a centrally controlled inbuilt system of security in all the new housing schemes so that it could be made attractive enough both for citizens and investors. He was chairing a meeting regarding housing schemes held at Chief Minister Secretariat Peshawar. The meeting was attended by Advisor to CM on Housing Amjad Afridi, Advisor to CM on Economic Affairs Rafaqatullah Baber, Advisor to CM on Excise & Taxation Mian Jamshid-ud-Din Kakakhel, Parliamentary Secretary Fazl-e-Elahi, Additional Chief Secretary Khalid Pervez, Secretary Housing Zahid Arif, Principal Secretary to CM Mohammad Ashfaq Khan, Special Secretary Local Government Asghar Ali, DG PDA Sareer Mohammad, DG Housing Qazi Laiq Ahmad, Commissioner Peshawar Munir Azam and other relevant quarters.
Secretary Housing Engr. Zahid Arif told the meeting that there was backlog of 1.17 million houses in K-P with increasing annual demand of one lakh twenty thousand units. He said that work on housing schemes in Jalozai Nowshera, Mulazai Warsak Road Peshawar, Jerma Bannu Road Kohat, Havalian, Dhamtor dautar Abbottabad and other ongoing projects has been accelerated while all the deputed staff assigned targets to be achieved by working 24 hours.
The CM revealed that not only peace was being restored in the province but large scale foreign investment was waiting to flood here provided proper planning was undertaken on our part. He said a number of investors were contacting the provincial govt to invest in mega projects while many evincing keen interest to invest in housing and urban development.
He also asked for making progress on old housing scheme proposal of new Peshawar Mega City and made clear that our govt believed in continuation of development process. So we would pursue all the steps and proposals of public interest even of the past like we were completing all the ongoing schemes that were left incomplete by the past regimes.
He directed to plan for this new city on the pattern of Capital City Islamabad. Secretary Housing told that the proposed city expand on more than fourteen thousands acres of land will suffice for a population of Six lacs located between Peshawar and Nowshera.
The cost of the project has been estimated to the tune of 200 billion rupees. About eleven thousands acres land of the proposed city in Peshawar district while the rest three thousand acres land falls in district Nowshera; and thus this city will be five times bigger in size than Hayatabad township.
It was told on the occasion that the proposed city would be linked through spacious highways from four various sides of GT Road and the biggest of them will be the 1000 feet spacious road from 12 KM distant G.T Road at Jhagra which would be constructed on the exact pattern of blue area while the other each 500 ft link roads include from Kohat road at Saifan and zero point motorway-GT Road Junction at Chamkani similarly the existing Chirat road will be also expanded and linked with the proposed city.
These four highways will cost 10-15 million rupees. It will be sufficient to cater for the hundreds years needs of the city. All the required land for the proposed city is arid and the population on the said land is too thin to be mentioned; and as such there are very scare prospects of any harm to agricultural products and displacement of local population.
Housing department will execute the project phase wise on public private partnership wherein the Chief Minister directed the Commissioner Peshawar to cooperate with the housing department for spadework. Pervez Khattak further directed to keep on board all the land owners and take full care of the small sized population inhabiting on the barren and non-cultivated land and to ensure the safety of all their basic needs and even their graveyards.
He stressed not to repeat the mistakes and flaws committed in the Regi Lalma Township. He admitted that the residential needs of the Peshawarites had increased many folds and due to the absence of proper planning in the past, issues related to traffic and accommodation in the city had increased immensely.
He added that the PTI led provincial government besides taking concrete steps for urban planning and development and resolving the accommodation problems of the public would ensure the fulfilment of the expectations of the general masses specially the low earning and poor people. He appreciated the performance of the Housing department for Urban Planning and expressed the hope that the new Peshawar Mega City Project would be materialized as a challenge.
