CPNE, COMS for adaptation of media safety protocol


Karachi: Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editor (CPNE) and Coalition on Media Safety (COMS) have urged the need of adaptation of a media safety protocol by all media houses in order to develop awareness for safety and security among media peoples while performing their professional deities in troubled areas.

This was emphasized by two media organizations during a joint meeting held here at CPNE Secretariat last evening.

CPNE & COMS representatives expressed their concern over the failure of federal & provincial’s governments for the arrest of culprits, prosecution and speedy trial involved in attacks on media houses and killing of journalists. For this reason the incident of attacks on journalists and media houses are increasing continuously as the extremist elements are getting encouragement by considering themselves above the law.

They also agreed to chalk out short, medium and long term plans for the safety and security of media peoples instead of depending governments departments for providing protection to them. It was also agreed that the time has come now to start collective efforts by all media organization from one platform after preparation of a compact plan for their safety and security.

CPNE and COMS appreciated the efforts of Mexico and Colombia governments to curb the incidents of attacks on media through strengthening their prosecution system and speedy trial of criminals. Both the media organizations asked the government to follow the steps taken by Colombia and Mexico governments to discourage the incidents of attacks on media here.

It was also urged that before publishing news items regarding terrorist activities or extremist elements be cautious about the safety of source of news in order to avoid any victimization activity against him.

Those who participated the joint session included Owais Aslam Ali, Iqbal Khattak and Shirin Soomro from COMS and Dr. Jabbar Khattak, Mushtaq Ahmad Qureshi, Hamid Husain Abidi, Aamer Mahmood and Ghulam Nabi Chandio.
