LARKANA: As many as 11,960 indoor patients died in Chandka Medical College Hospital (CMCH) during last three years 2011-13 and 16,634 others left against medical advice (LAMA) which is usually termed that they were forced to get treatment at private medical centers through paid agents, according to hospital sources.
As many as 223,173 patients were admitted to this 1350-bed capacity hospital during these years, out of which 148,922 were discharged after treatment.
The bed occupancy remained 779,998 and 53,818 major & minor operations were also conducted. As many as 1,532,348 patients were examined in OPD during the above mentioned three-year period, 389,634 X-Rays were conducted, 255,743 ultrasounds were carried out, 1,409,969 laboratory examinations were conducted and 1,641 patients’ kidney stones were removed through lithotripsy machine.
The 22,095 kidney failure patients got dialysis, 48,982 ECGs were done, 20576 NVD tests and 10884 electrocardiograms were also conducted in the same period in this largest teaching hospital of upper Sindh. During 2013 as many as 4,058 patients died, in 2012 as many as 3,652 patients lost their precious lives and 4250 patients expired during 2011.
This performance report was recently sent to higher government authorities for perusal and maintaining record. Most of the patients died in Nephrology, Paeds Medicine, Chest, Surgery, Cardiology & Medicine Departments. They died despite availability of required essential equipment, instruments, machinery and medicines.
This performance report of all the wards of the hospital clearly indicates that the consultants (professors and their subordinates) working under the administrative control of Chandka Medical College & Benazir Bhutto Medical University do not perform their government duties properly and they take care of their private patients more diligently and carefully than public sector hospital poor patients.
It is also a fact that wards are only to be managed and looked after by these senior and junior doctors and if they deprive poor patients of this specialized medical facility then it is useless to run hospitals in government sector, remarked a senior citizen of Larkana.
According to reliable sources, no consultant takes round in this huge hospital during evening and night shifts even of their respective wards to see the condition of serious patients.
He said that it is astonishing to reveal that there was still no reporting of CT Scan installed at CMCH because of the fact that no FCPS Radiologist has so far been appointed in Benazir Bhutto Medical University or Chandka Medical College and only Diploma holders are running this vital diagnostic department and added that MRI facility is yet to be started which is really condemn-able.
He demanded of the Sindh government to bound all the senior post-graduate doctors to perform their duties properly for the betterment of ailing mankind or they should be taken to task.
