SIALKOT: Food Department has finally started the much delayed wheat procurement despite the bad weather at all the 43 official wheat procurement centers established in Gujranwala Division’s Sialkot, Narowal , Gujrat, Mandi Bahaud Din and Gujranwala districts .
The food department was purchasing wheat yield at the rate of Rs. 1300 per mound (40 KGs) wheat direct from the wheat growers and small farmers at the said official wheat procurement centers , where the department has yet provided as many as 783120 gunny bags to the wheat growers and small farmers as per the ratio of eight gunny bags per acre.
This year, the Punjab government has fixed a target of 4320000 bags of wheat as official wheat procurement target for Gujranwala Division, in this regard.
However, there was no rush at the official wheat procurement centers because this season the standing wheat crops on more than 150,000 acres of land were badly damaged due to unseasoned torrential rains and hailing in the region (a hub of producing bumper quality wheat yield).
District Food Controller (DFC) Sialkot Mohammad Rohail Butt told that the gunny bags were being given purely on merit at all the nine official wheat procurement centers established in Sialkot district’s all the four Sialkot, Daska, Sambrial and Pasrur tehsils here.
Food Department would purchase as many as 82000 matric tons of wheat yield direct from the wheat growers and small farmers, besides, making all out sincere efforts to curb the menace of the middlemen and commission agents in this regard.
DFC Sialkot added that the Food Department was also making the computerized record of all the wheat growers and small farmers in Sialkot district here.
He said that the wheat procurement would continue for next 40 days in Sialkot district’s official wheat procurement centers under the direct supervision of the Punjab government.
