SIALKOT: The journalists in Sialkot, Daska, Sambrial, Uggoki, Head Marala, Chawinda, Badiana, Pasrur and surrounding areas on Wednesday observed complete strike to lodge strong protest against the arrest of Bahawalnagar based senior journalist Suhail Khan the Nation correspondent, by the local police and implicating him and his brother into a fictitious case by the orders of administration of Bahawalnagar, as a punishment for making public the corruption of some officials.
In Sialkot, an important condemnation meeting of senior journalists held here. Chairman Sialkot Press Club Anwar Hussain Bajwa and General Secretary Sialkot Press Club Mian Naeem Iqbal jointly chaired the meeting. During the meeting, senior journalists Zafar Malik, Abid Hussain Mehdi, Abdul Shakoor Mirza, Arif Mehmood Sheikh, Humayun Iqbal Malik, Zahid Ali Khan, Muhammad Noor Ahmed, Junaid Aftab, Abraiz Khan, Gulzar Ahmed, Madam Munawar Sultana, Imran Rehman, Irfan Gul, Umair Ashraf, Shehzad Riaz Butt, Abdul Majeed Butt and others strongly condemned the “highhandedness’ of the Bahawalnagar administration for targeting the media men, particularly The Nation correspondent Suhail Khan, getting registered a fake case against him and his younger brother Asim for “what is described” as going against the “mighty” local administration.
They said that the journalists were the eyes and ears of the society and government should protect the journalists from the bureaucratic highhandedness. They asked the PML-N government to ensure freedom of press and expression in the country. They also termed it as attack on the freedom of the media as well, urging the Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to replace the AC Bahawalnagar with immediate effect to avert the move by the journalists which would spread in every nook and corner of the country if the justice would not be done with The Nation Correspondent Sohail Khan and his brother.
