PGMEA demands immediate ban on export of blue split leather

SIALKOT:,,, Pakistan Gloves Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PGMEA) has urged the government to ensure early and immediate imposition of ban on export of “blue split leather” to save the gloves industry from total collapse.

Talking to the newsmen here Monday, PGMEA Chairman Shehzada Ibne Iqbal Syed said due to shortage of Split Leather its price has increased dreadfully. In this scenario it has become difficult to export gloves at reasonable cost. He said that export of blue split leather was adversely impacting the gloves industry as sufficient material is not available in the market. “We have huge foreign orders of gloves, but due to non-availability of the material the business community is confronting multiple problems,” he said.

He revealed that wet blue leather had been exported since 2004-5. Since that time gloves industry has come in critical crisis. Chairman PGMEA apprised that among 280 tannery units about 50% units are utilizing wet blue leather. Thus 200,000 workers are facing severe problems.

Shehzada Ibne Iqbal Syed said that it would be a serious blow to national exchequer if the situation remained the same as Pakistan would lose its grip on international market. “Though the government has imposed 20 percent duty on the export of split leather, unfortunately it yet being exported by changing its case” he added.

He said that is right time that the government should take serious action while considering the gravity of this serious matter to keep the gloves industry alive in the international competitive market. He further added that timely action of the Government could not only support to protect the gloves industry but would also avoid the huge unemployment of more than 200,000 industrial workers engaged with the gloves industry. He pointed out that export of gloves amounts to over about US$ 330 million. If the gravity of this serious issue is not considered there may be rapid decline in the gloves export.
