SIALKOT: Sialkot made soccer ball “Brazuca” will be used in upcoming FIFA Football World Cup matches in Brazil, the biggest ever event of the planet, after a gap of 32 years. The ball was produced by Forward Sports Sialkot for Adidas. The name Brazuca is an informal local term which means “Brazilian” or to describe the Brazilian way of life.
Talking to the newsmen at his office at Sahowala here, the CEO of Forward Sports Sialkot, a leading soccer balls manufacturer and exporter of Sialkot Khawaja Masud Akhtar said that the Brazuca is a breakthrough innovation featuring a revolutionary 6 panel design created for every player on the field. The ball features six identical panels alongside a unique surface that will provide improved grip, touch, stability and aerodynamics on the field, he added.
Khawaja Masud Akhtar said that the success story of Sialkot industries is based on the unmatched skill and craftsmanship of local workers.
He said that he first dreamt up a goal of his own: to manufacture the ball for the biggest soccer tournament on the planet. But, it took only 33 days to make it happen.
Earlier, his factory in Sialkot-Pakistan had made balls for the German Bundesliga, French league and Champions League, but he had never snagged a World Cup contract.
Another leading soccer balls manufacturer and exporter Mian Naeem Javaid told the newsmen that in 1980s Sialkot gained international celebrity status when it produced the “Tango Ball” used in FIFA Football World cup in 1982 which led further growth of soccer ball industry.
President Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) Dr. Sarfraz Bashir said that Sialkot is the only city of Pakistan where 99 percent products are exported to various countries of the world. Sialkot based small and medium industries are earning foreign exchange of over US $ 1.6 billion dollars annually through exports and strengthening the national economy.
Prof. Safdar Sandal (former Chairman of Pakistan Sports Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association-PSGMEA) disclosed that the manufacturing of the official match footballs for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil was briskly underway in Sialkot factories, a city globally known for producing world class sports gears. All the major international brands like Adidas, Nike, Puma, Select, Litto, Umbro, Mitre, Micassa, Diadora, Wilsoms and Decathion are sourcing their supply of footballs from this export-oriented city and hub of cottage industry of the country.
He said that some Sialkot based hand stitched soccer balls manufacturing factories have got the bulk export orders of hand stitched footballs from the world ahead of the Brazil Football World Cup 2014, due to which there was a double shift production by the male and female workers in the factories now-a-days.
He said that this export order was diverted to Sialkot-Pakistan from China due to which, the hand stitched soccer balls manufacturing factories in Sialkot were now busy in manufacturing the machine stitched footballs now a days , as this number was growing rapidly day by day. He said that the world’s demand of hand stitched footballs was 45 percent while the demand of machine stitched footballs is 55 percent.
