Universal Salt Iodization Program starts

LARKANA: Universal Salt Iodization Program has been started here in the district. In this regard one day training session for salt processors was conducted today in the DHO Office. Dr. Abdul Wahid Tagar, District Focal Person, Nutrition @ Universal Salt Iodization, told PPI about the Sindh Compulsory Salt Iodization Act Bill 2013 passed by Provincial Assembly of Sindh.

Inayat Ali Mangi and Khan Mohammad, Field Program Officers, trained the session about the method of Iodization. District Health Officer, Dr. Khalilullah Shaikh, insisted the salt processors about Salt Iodization. He urged the processors to implement the process of Iodization for the interest of public. While talking to PPI Dt. Tagar said that iodine deficiency disorders is a serious public health problem in Pakistan.

At present, 40 percent women and 60 percent children are affected in Sindh province alone due to Iodine. Iodine deficiency is one of the leading causes of preventable mental handicaps worldwide. He further said iodine deficiency disorders can be responsible for cretinism, still birth, miscarriage and increase infant mortality.

Dr Tagar said to ensure adequate availability and use of Iodized salt, Provincial Assembly of Sindh passed “The Sindh Compulsory Iodization of salt” Bill in 2013. According to this act, the manufacturers, processors and importers of salt shall not process, store, sell uniodized salt neither sell any misbranded or mislabeled salt and any person who contravenes any of the provisions of this act shall be prosecuted by Law.
