Modi regime criminalizing journalism in IIOJK

Srinagar, April 29, 2023 (PPI-OT):In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, journalists continue to work in most trying conditions as the victimization of media persons by the Indian authorities has increased manifold since August 5, 2019.

According to an analysis by the Kashmir Media Service, India has made independent journalism almost impossible in IIOJK after introducing so-called media policy in 2020. Modi regime is using strong-arm-tactics to strangulate media in occupied Kashmir where journalists are harassed, abducted, threatened and tortured simply for doing their job, it said.

The analysis pointed out that the Kashmiri journalists are booked under draconian laws for speaking truth and many of them including Aasif Sultan, Fahad Shah and Sajjad Gul are facing detentions under draconian laws.

“Journalists in IIOJK face killings, murder attempts, arrests and threats on a daily basis. A number of journalists have been killed, scores injured since 1989 in IIOJK,” it said. The analysis maintained that India wants to hide the ground realities of IIOJK from the world by criminalizing journalism. International community must put pressure on New Delhi to allow the media to operate freely in occupied Kashmir.
