Landikotal: The anti-polio campaign entered the third day in Khyber Agency on Monday. About 400 Khasadar and Levy personnel were engaged in the vaccination campaign in the twin Tehsils of Khyber Agency, Landikotal and Jamrud. As many as 280 teams consisting of KKF, KLF and health workers were formed to administer polio drops to approximately 0.2millin children, health department sources in Khyber Agency said, adding Qamber Khel and Kala Khel tribes of Bara were also included in the polio campaign.
So far two polio workers have been shot dead in Jamrud sub-division of Khyber Agency, compelling the EPI, health workers and supervisors to refuse carryi9ng out vaccination campaign in Khyber Agency.
As many as twenty polio cases in Khyber Agency have been recorded whereas in the entire FATA 66 cases recorded in the last few years.
After the reluctance of health workers, the political administration decided to train KKF and KLF personnel to vaccinate the children. Health official Wazir Akbar Khan arranged training sessions for the security personnel at Jamrud and Landikotal.
The importance of the current polio campaign could be seen from the fact that President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain himself came to Governor House Peshawar to inaugurate the polio campaign and also addressed some selected tribal elders to sensitize them on polio disease. The tribal parliamentarians were also present on the occasion.
Sources informed that in the first phase, the polio campaign was started in Kala Khel and Qamber Khel tribes of Bara sub-division of Khyber Agency whereas the rest of the area could not be included in the campaign due to security concerns.
