Embarrassed India plays down UN chief’s remarks on Kashmir
New Delhi, October 02, 2018 (PPI-OT): Embarrassed by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ statement on Kashmir ahead of his visit to India, New Delhi tried to play down the remarks by saying that they “should not be seen as interference in India’s internal matters”.
Antonio Guterres who is presently visiting India just before leaving New York for Delhi after the conclusion of the UN General Assembly Session had said, “I remain concerned by the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. I encourage positive dialogue for disagreements to be resolved peacefully.”
The UN Chief arrived in New Delhi on a four-day official visit on Monday. He is accompanied by a six-member delegation. An Indian official while talking to reporters in New Delhi failed to satisfy media men on Guterres’ remarks on Kashmir. “This is not something new, and should not be seen as interference in India’s internal matters,” he said.
The Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik before the start of Antonio Guterres’ visit wrote a letter to him. The letter said that India’s refusal to hold dialogue was doing unimaginable harm not only to Kashmir but to the entire south Asian region. Drawing his attention to rights violations by Indian forces, it said that the lack of sustained attention by the international community to this aspect and not calling India to account on this score had emboldened its armed forces to commit human rights violations in occupied Kashmir.
