Islamabad: British High Commissioner Mr Adam Thomson hosted the launch in Islamabad of British author William Dalrymple’s new book, ‘Return of a King The Battle for Afghanistan.’
‘Return of a King’ is an analysis of the First Afghan War, told through the lives of remarkable, unforgettable characters. It uses fresh contemporary Afghan accounts of the conflict.
Prizewinning and bestselling historian Dalrymple has written eight acclaimed books on a wide variety of subjects. In his new book, Dalrymple has uncovered sources never used before, including nine previously untranslated full-length contemporary Afghan accounts of the conflict and the autobiography of Shah Shuja himself.
Speaking at the book launch on Tuesday night, the British High Commissioner Adam Thomson said “Return of a King’ is a product of William Dalrymple’s many years of passionate engagement and research in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.
It is exemplary history by a great modern British historian and writer. Drawing on the perspectives of Afghans, and of British and regional actors of the nineteenth century the book no doubt offers food for thought for policy makers today.
The book enriches our understanding of the deep historical ties that Britain shares with Afghanistan, Pakistan and the rest of South Asia. It will certainly bring the story of these ties to a large new audience. I am sure that ‘Return of a King’ will be read not only with enjoyment but also with great interest in Pakistan.”
