Election to be conducted in free, fair manner: Secretary ECP

ISLAMABAD: Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan Thursday said that next general elections would be conducted in free, fair and transparent manner. The elections would be held according to aspiration of the people, he stated this while talking to a private television channel. He said that Chief Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim was fully committed to conduct free and fair elections. He said that free and transparent elections is the only solution to bring the country out of the present challenges.

Replying to a question, he said that present assembly would complete its Constitutional tenure till the mid of March 2013.

The Secretary said that according to the Constitution, the election cannot be postponed without any genuine reason, catastrophe or crisis.

He added that ECP is fully committed to conduct elections on time.

He said “We have introduced different reforms to hold free and fair elections.”

Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan said “The transparent voter lists are being prepared with the support of NADRA which is essential to stop rigging in the elections.”

He said that Parliament is supreme institution for making legislation. He said that Election Commission would start door-to-door campaign for checking the voters’ names in the lists.

Replying to another question he said that political parties can better judge the moral credibility of the candidates contesting elections.

He added that the voters can select the right person through voting. The Secretary ECP said that Army would be deployed in the sensitive areas for maintaining peace during the electoral process.
