HEC & US Embassy Train 104 English Teachers Across Pakistan

Islamabad: English Language Teaching reforms (ELTR) Phase-II of Higher Education Commission in collaboration with US Embassy organized four workshops on English Language Teaching Skills in Lahore, Islamabad, Jamshoro and Bahawalpur respectively.

A total number of 104 English Language Teachers from different public sector universities and colleges were trained through these ELT workshops.

Mr. Dieter Brauhn and Mr. David Bholke renowned ELT experts facilitated as the international resource persons. The participants were certified jointly by HEC and US Embassy.

The main objective of these workshops was to equip English teachers with international trends and techniques of ELT and to provide them an all-out international exposure while sitting in Pakistan.

The workshops aimed to delineate the techniques of English Language Teaching (ELT), to equip college teachers with effective pedagogy, resources, ideas and activities to make the overall teaching-learning process participatory and interactive.

The organized ELT workshops were a fusion of innovative activities and theory to provide a thoroughgoing exposure of teaching techniques to English fraternity.

Through these workshops the participants also learned to understand and explore the ways of encouraging students’ participation and also helped them to present and practice vocabulary and grammar through learner-centric approaches.

HEC has undertaken dynamic steps to train teaching faculty of college sector along with universities faculty to ensure the quality of teaching process at college level as well. Participants from interior Sindh and far flung areas of Punjab, KPK, AJK and Balochistan participated in these workshops.

The content of workshops dealt with the very idea of making English teachers reflect on how to enhance the general communicative competence and the more technical skills of students in different teaching situations.

The first course of this series was organized from November 26-30, 2012 at LCWU Lahore. 30 participants were trained and got firsthand knowledge on international ELT techniques. Mr. Dieter Bruhn facilitated as IRP. Dr. Sabiha Mansoor, Vice Chancellor LCWU, Lahore appreciated the efforts of HEC.

Two IRP workshops on the same concept of enhancing ELT skills were organized at HEC, Islamabad and Mehran University of Engineering & Technology, Jamshoro from December 03-07, 2012 facilitated by Mr. Dieter Bruhn & Mr. David Bholke as IRPs.

The basic concept was to encourage high standards of written and spoken English by resorting to the widely-accepted standards of English grammar, intelligible pronunciation and legible writing.

Prof. Dr. Khawaja Azam Ali Managing Director Quality Assurance Agency HEC was the chief guest of closing ceremony of IRP course at HEC Islamabad. US high officials attended the closing ceremony as well.

Prof. Dr. Khawaja Azam Ali said that such workshops provide great opportunity to the teachers to hone their skills and review the methods and techniques of teaching so that they remain in tune with the changing times and new teaching trends in ELT.

Speaking on the occasion Ms. Noor Amna Malik (DG, LI) said that the pedagogy of teachers in English literature and language needs rethinking and the present IRP workshop is motivated by this need to provide possible alternatives to the existing rather prescribed pedagogy. She appreciated the collaboration of US Embassy as well.
