Mirwaiz pays tributes to Maqbool Butt, Afzal Guru on their anniversaries
Srinagar, February 10, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has paid glowing tributes to prominent Kashmiri liberation leaders, Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru on their martyrdom anniversaries.
India had sent Muhammad Afzal Guru to gallows in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on 9th of February, 2013 and Muhammad Maqbool Butt, on 11th of February, 1984 for their role in the ongoing Kashmir freedom movement. Their bodies remain buried in the premises of the jail.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who continues to be under house detention, today, in a statement issued in Srinagar said, “Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru were secretly sent to gallows at Tihar Jail in New Delhi. Their sacrifices have got etched in our collective conscience striving for right to self-determination. The sacrifices offered by Butt and Guru are a constant reminder of the great sacrifices rendered by the people of Kashmir in our 71-year long struggle.”
He said the best way to pay tributes to the martyrs of Kashmir, including Maqbool Butt and Afzal Guru, is to remain united and steadfast in pursuance of the Kashmir cause. “New Delhi has left no stone unturned to crush people’s resistance and resolve for the settlement of the dispute and every day new suppressive methods are employed in this regard,” he deplored.
He appealed to the international community to take note of the people’s sacrifices and the repression unleashed by Delhi. He also urged the world bodies especially human rights organizations to ask New Delhi to return the mortal remains of Maqbool Butt and Afzal Guru buried in Tihar Jail to their families for burial in Kashmir.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement, Mir Shahid Saleem in a statement in Jammu, paying rich tributes to the martyrs, demanded the transfer of their mortal remains to Kashmir.
