OIC reaffirms support to Kashmiris’ just struggle

Jeddah, February 27, 2019 (PPI-OT): The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir reaffirming its support to the Kashmiris’ just struggle for securing their right to self-determination has demanded of India to immediately stop cordon and search operations against the people of occupied Kashmir and respect their fundamental and basic human rights.

The OIC in an emergency meeting at its Secretariat in Jeddah also urged India to resolve the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant OIC and UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions as per the aspirations of the Kashmiri people by giving them their right to self-determination.

The meeting was chaired on behalf of the OIC Secretary General by Assistant Secretary General, Ambassador Hameed A Opeloyeru, and attended by Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, Tehmina Janjua, and permanent representatives of Azerbaijan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Niger. It was also attended by the president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sardar Masood Khan.

The OIC Contact Group reiterated its continued support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their just struggle for securing their inalienable right to self-determination. It appealed to the OIC and the UN to use their good offices to check the dangerous escalation by India which is threat to regional peace and security.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Hameed A Opeloyeru expressed grave concern at the rising tension in South Asia. He strongly condemned the recent wave of repression, brutal killing of innocent Kashmiri civilians and reaffirmed OIC’s principled position on supporting the people of Jammu and Kashmir in achieving their legitimate rights including the right to self-determination.

He emphasized that the Kashmir dispute should be settled in accordance with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people and the resolutions of OIC and UN. The Contact Group appreciated Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan’s offer for peace and dialogue to India to resolve all issues. It also expressed deep concern over the heightened tension and called for immediate de-escalation in the region.
