SHC orders not to arrest freewill marriage couple

Karachi: The Sindh High Court on Saturday restrained police officials from arresting or harassing a freewill couple, who were booked in kidnapping case due contracting a marriage against the wishes of their families.

Headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, the division bench was hearing a petition of Safia and her husband Anwar Ali, who sought protection from the police and quashment of FIR.

The petitioner woman submitted that she had married Anwar Ali on November 21, 2012 after executing the affidavit of freewill.

She stated before the court that her family members did not accept their marriage and the couple had been declared liable to be killed in the name of honour as she had married without the consent of her family members.

She said her brothers lodged a false FIR 292/2012 against her husband for kidnapping her with the Ghotki police station

Citing province of Sindh through home secretary, senior superintendent of police SSP Ghotki, station house officer of Ghotki police station, and family members of the woman petitioner as respondents the freewill couple prayed to the court to quash the case.

The court directed police officials that there shall be no arrest in respect to the subject FIR.

The court also directed police officials to provide effective security to the petitioners.
