Sindh Assembly passes Jinnah Sindh Medical University bill amid MQM walkout

Karachi: Sindh Assembly here Thursday passed the Jinnah Sindh Medical University bill amid uproar and walkout of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM).

On the agenda of business there was a government bill no 21 of 2012- The Jinnah Sindh Medical University Bill- 212 for consideration; however, Sindh law minister Muhammad Ayaz Soomro moved a motion to withdraw his bill. The house adopted his motion and the bill was withdrawn.

Then, Muhammad Ayaz Soomro rose to seek permission to bring supplementary order of the day and on permission introduced the government bill number 16 of 2013 – The Jinnah Sindh Medical University at Karachi bill 2013.

Syed Sardar Ahmed, Faisal Ali Sabzwari and other MQM members requested the treasury benches to differ the consideration of this bill till Monday, March 04, 2013. They said they have not read the bill as it was not on the agenda of the day. They said the government was introducing a negative precedent to get the bill passed through crude majority. They said this would spoil the political peace in Sindh and deal a serious blow to the politics of reconciliation. However, Muhammad Ayaz Soomro insisted the chair that he would present the bill for consideration today. Sindh senior minister for education and literacy Pir Mazharul Haq and other treasury members supported him, and the bill was considered amid loud protest and walkout of MQM members. In the absence of MQM members the house passed the bill unanimously.

Earlier, Muhammad Ayaz Soomro introduced the government bill No 15 of 2013- The Shaheed Benazir Bhutto City University bill 2013; however, on his request its consideration was deferred till Monday.
