Islamabad: Minister of State for Education and Standards in Higher Education Balighur Rehman has said the Government is working on a plan to constitute National Commission for a uniform educational curriculum throughout the country.
He was speaking at a seminar “From Health and Education to Sustainable Development” organized jointly by Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation and UNESCO in Islamabad Wednesday.
The Minister of State said the Government is also taking steps for bringing tax and economic reforms to enhance allocations for education and health sectors up to six percent of the GDP.
He said due to discontinuity of political system‚ educational allocations went down below two percent of the GDP but the Government is committed to raise it up to four percent during the next four years.
Balighur Rehman said the Government is also working for ensuring to remove gender disparity in education and reduce drop out of children from schools.
He said budget allocations for non-formal education sector has been increased by hundred and fifty percent in the current budget while higher education has been given over forty-eight billion rupees which is a record.
He said the Government has also prepared a national consolidated plan for the promotion of education particularly primary education‚ which is vital for overall sustainable socio-economic development of the country.
Chairman Higher Education Commission Imtiaz Gilani‚ in his remarks‚ stressed the need for a consensus long term strategy to improve education sector.
He said promotion of education is vital for socio-economic development of the country and the Government will have to concentrate on improving education in the public sector.
Director General Radio Pakistan Samina Parvez said education and health are best investment to ensure development.
She said Radio Pakistan being the largest media house is working on a strategy to revive its programmes to enhance awareness among the masses about education and health.
She said special campaign has been launched to create awareness about importance of education in the society.
Samina Parvez said although Radio Pakistan has made successful efforts to educate the people but there is still room to expedite and consolidate these efforts with the help of civil society‚ students‚ teachers‚ NGOs and other media organizations.
