Islamabad: According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 39% Pakistanis said that high taxes are the main reason for not paying or hiding taxes; 35% said the main reason is desperate financial situation.
A nationally representative sample of adult men and women, from across the four provinces was asked, “What are the main reasons for not paying or hiding the taxes?”
In response to this question, 39% respondents said the main reason for not paying or hiding taxes is high taxes, 35% said the main reason is desperate financial situation, 30% said the main reason for non-payment of taxes is unfair treatment of different businesses, 22% said the lack of clarity regarding tax legislation is the main reason, while 20% blamed frequent changes of tax laws and 12% mentioned complicated procedure for filing taxes as the main reason. 1% respondents did not respond.
The study was released by Gilani Research Foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International.
The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 1639 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during March 23- March 30, 2015. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
