ISLAMABAD: Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the main suspect in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, on Wednesday submitted a plea against his physical remand in the court of additional sessions judge Islamabad Zeba Chaudhry.
Lakhvi’s lawyer Rizwan Abbasi has stated in the petition that a fabricated first information report (F I R) was registered against his client, thus, his two-day detention order should be suspended.
The additional sessions judge described the matter as sensitive and said that before giving a decision on the application, all the sides will have to be heard. The judge asked the petitioner and the investigating officer to appear in the court on Thursday (today).
After a judge on December 18 granted bail to Lahkvi in the Mumbai attacks case there had been concerns that he would be freed, possibly as early as on Tuesday.
But on Tuesday, police arrested him on another case. Someone had filed a complaint with Golra police station saying that Lakhvi had abducted his brother-in-law six and a half years ago. The judge granted a police request for time to investigate the accusation, extending Lakhvi’s detention for two days.
