Govt committed to freedom of expression: Rashid

Islamabad: Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid has expressed the government’s commitment to freedom of expression.

Talking to the media persons in Islamabad Thursday after inquiring about the health of anchorperson Hamid Mir, he said he had resisted the closure of channels in the past and he still sticks to this stance.

Pervaiz Rashid said if any channel tenders apology over its mistake then the matter should not prolonged keeping in view the issues of national security, terrorism and energy crisis faced by the country today.

Emphasizing the need for promoting the culture of tolerance, the Information Minister said the ongoing tug of war amongst different media outlets should come to an end and they should openly accept each other.

Responding to a question, the Information Minister said he has held deliberations with several prominent journalists and their different bodies to find solution to the prevailing situation.

To another question, Pervaiz Rashid said PEMRA is an independent regulatory authority and he can not give any dictation to it.

The PEMRA has yet to hold meetings on the issue of a private media channel.
