ISLAMABAD: According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 25% Pakistanis believe that the right age for a girl to get married is up to 18 years; 37% believe that the appropriate age to get married is between 19-21 years.
A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked, “What, in your opinion, is the appropriate age for a girl to get married?”.
In response to this question, 25% said Up to 18 years, 37% said 19-21 years, 17% said 22-24 years and 18% said 25-27 years. 3% on the other hand said 28-30 years.
The same question was also asked in November 2010. In 2010, 20% respondents had said that girls should get married up to the age of 18 years and this increased to 25% who said the same in 2016. 37% said that girls should get married within 19-21 years of age in 2010.
While 19% said that they should get married within 22-24 years. 21% respondents said that girls should get married between 25-27 years and 2% said that they should get married between 28-30 years while 1% did not respond.
Overall, the number of respondents who believe that girls should get married at a younger age has increased during these 6 years.
The study was released by Gilani Research Foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International.
The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 1849 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during January 11 – January 18, 2016. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
