ISLAMABAD: For the first time in the history of Pakistan, young Mahin Aftab Qureshi, did herself, her family and her country proud on Friday, in reaching the finals, in singles and doubles, of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) sponsored 14 and Under Girls tournaments being played in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
However, she lost fighting in the finals to the top-seeded player from Sri Lanka, Anita Senivaratne, with a score of 1-6, 3-6.
The fact that Mahin Aftab had to play three matches a day before, in warm and humid conditions that can seriously sap, may well have contributed to her abilities on the court on Friday, in a major way.
She is now preparing to play the second similar tournament at the same venue starting in a couple of days. Mahin and her older sister, Salina Aftab Qureshi, are budding players with a promise of being future Pakistan champions in the coming years.
The President of Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF), Salim Saifullah Khan and the Senior Management of PTF, expressed delight over Mahin’s performance over each round and congratulated her father, Air Commodore Aftab Qureshi, over the formidable achievements of both sisters over recent events.
It is hoped that Mahin will not be subjected to schedules where she is required to play three matches in one day in the next tournament and will, therefore, perform better.
