ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that Pakistan wants to enhance cooperation with Uzbekistan in various sectors including economy.
During a meeting with Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov in Tashkent on Tuesday, the Prime Minister said having strong relations with Central Asian States is corner stone our foreign policy.
Nawaz Sharif said Uzbekistan’s economic progress is commendable. He said Pakistan and Uzbekistan are linked in religious and cultural ties. Uzbek President Islam Karimov said Pakistan is an important country of the region and the Muslim World. He said Pakistan is rich in natural and human resources and it should take benefit of this asset.
Both the countries also signed various agreements of cooperation in different sectors. Trade Development Authority signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance bilateral trade. They also signed a protocol to avoid double taxation. Foreign ministries of both the countries signed a protocol to increase bilateral cooperation.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Uzbek President Islam Karimov also signed a joint declaration. Earlier, on arrival at the presidential palace, a formal welcome ceremony was held in honour of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He was received at the airport among others by his Uzbek counterpart, Foreign Minister and Governor of Tashkent.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Uzbek counter part Shavkat Mirziyoyev also held informal talks at the airport. They discussed bilateral relations.
Prime Minister is accompanied by a high level delegation including Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi, Adviser on National Security Nasir Khan Janjua , the special assistant on Aviation and other senior officials. During his stay in Tashkent, the Prime Minister will hold talks with Uzbek leadership covering all aspects of bilateral relations.
