Islamabad: At least eleven people‚ including Additional Sessions Judge Rafaqat Awan‚ were killed and twenty three injured in an attack on District courts in Islamabad on Monday.
According to reports two or three persons stormed the courts while firing and hurling hand grenades. There are reports that the attackers later blew them up.
IG Police Islamabad Sikandar Hayat told media that one suicide bomber attacked the court of Additional Sessions Judge‚ while the other hit a place near the office of Bar Association.
He said it seems that the attackers intended to free their arrested accomplices‚ but they could not achieve their target. The IG said two to three terrorists opened fire in the court area.
Police and other security personnel have cordoned off the area and started search operation.
PIMS Hospital spokesperson Dr. Ayesha‚ while talking to media‚ has confirmed that eleven dead bodies have so far been received.
She said the injured are being provided medical treatment on emergency basis.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali Khan sought report from DG National Crisis Management Cell about the incident.
