Islamabad: A delegation of 16th Mid-Career Management Course of the National Institute of Management (NIM) visited the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Secretariat, Islamabad on Monday. The participants included officers of different occupational groups and services like Pakistan Administrative Service, Office Management, Information, Pakistan Audit and Accounts, Foreign Service of Pakistan, Pakistan Customs Service, Postal, Railways, and Inland Revenue Service.
On the occasion, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Executive Director HEC, delivered a lecture entitled “Strengthening Higher Education in Pakistan”. He apprised the delegates of various functions of HEC including Attestation and Accreditation, Human Resource Development, Learning Innovation, Research and Development, Strengthening IT Infrastructure and Facilities, Monitoring and Evaluation, Sports, etc.
The Executive Director said that since HEC’s inception in 2002, an increasing trend has been observed in student enrolment in universities. Highlighting HEC’s efforts for development of higher education sector, he said that the reason for institution’s success was adherence to the principles of transparency and merit.
Apprising the participants about technology readiness of HEC, he said that Higher Education Web Portal has an easy access for everyone. “Pakistan Education and Research Network (PERN) and Digital Library projects are facilitating over 250 universities and higher education institutions for research purposes. HEC Video Conferencing Network, launched in December 2006, has facilitated over 700 events. While 79 higher learning institutions have been equipped with video conferencing facility which has reduced the distance prevailing among institutions,” he said.
The Executive Director also elaborated the mechanism of funds distribution to HEIs in the country. He also highlighted the monitoring system developed by HEC for bringing efficiency in the system.
