Islamabad: According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 53% Pakistanis believe that dowry plays a very important role in our society; 69% believe it is not possible for a girl to get married without a dowry.
A nationally representative sample of men and women, from across the four provinces was asked “In your opinion, in our society how important a part does dowry play?” Responding to this, 53% believe that dowry plays a very important role, 31% believe it is somewhat important, 13% think it plays a very little role while 2% believe that it plays no role. However, 1% did not give a view.
In another question it was asked “Do you believe that today it is possible for a girl to get married without a dowry or not?” In response, 24% believe that it is possible while 69% believe that it is not possible. 7% did not give a view.
The study was released by Gilani Foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2604 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during January 13, 2014 – Jan 20, 2014. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
