Islamabad: Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan Federal Minister for Ministry of National Food Security & Research has left for Rome (Italy) to attend the 37th Session of Governing Council of International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) .
Federal Minister will represent Pakistan during the session. The said Session will focus on theme- ‘Investing in smallholder family farmers for the future we want’.
The purpose of the discussion is to provide valuable opportunity to gain fresh insights into how best to improve the livelihoods of this pivotal group who produce food for one in every three of the world’s inhabitants. Today, the benefits of investing in smallholder family farmers are greater than ever before.
As leaders in food production and overseers of natural resources, smallholders have the potential to be a driving force for poverty reduction, pro-poor growth, food and nutrition security, and the attainment of climate goals – if given the tools to do so.
However, smallholders are paradoxically still among the world’s poorest and hungriest groups, a situation that must be overturned.
Today the renewed interest of the global community in agricultural development, specifically smallholder farming, is providing exciting development opportunities for smallholder family farmers across the globe.
It is also becoming increasing evident that for inclusive and equitable development, investing in family farmers will be indispensable.
The Session will also deliberate on constraints faced by smallholders such as scant infrastructure, lake of storage facilities and water and inadequate access to finance and markets and how best to address these issues through an enabling policy environment- if the potential of smallholder family farmers is to be realized for the greater global good.
