Govt to privatize 26% shares of PIA: Senate told


Islamabad: The Senate was informed that the government intends to privatize 26 percent shares of Pakistan International Airline because the Corporation is facing a loss of 87 million rupees per day.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs‚ Shaikh Aftab Ahmad told the House during question hour that PIA suffered a loss of 33 billion rupees during 2012 while the loss during the first nine months of last year was 31 billion rupees.

To a question‚ Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastgir Khan informed the House that Pakistan has not yet given Non-Discriminatory Market Access and Most Favoured Nation status to India.

He said both the countries have made commitments and negotiations are underway in this regard. He‚ however‚ said that NDMA status has been agreed between the two countries on reciprocal basis.

He said till the availability of level playing field no NDMA will be granted. He said India had given Pakistan MFN status in 1996.

To a question‚ the Minister said during the meeting of Commerce Ministers in New Delhi last month both sides had agreed to enhance operational hours at Wahga-Attari land route.

Meanwhile, Chairman Standing Committee on Water and Power‚ Muhammad Zahid Khan presented before the House report of the Committee for the period from 21st March 2013 to 9th September 2013.
