Karachi: Public transport buses in Karachi continue to defy the official colour-coding but the transport department of the Sindh government and its related agencies are looking the other way.
The road-based public transport sector is dominated by private transporters who run this vital public service sector as per their sweet wish, ignoring the government rules and regulations. In every urban city all over the world the public transport buses are only allowed on roads when they are painted as per official bus colour-coding.
There is red colour for big buses and yellow colour for minibuses, but in Karachi public transport buses and minibuses do not follow this colour coding. In the city buses and minibuses painted with different colours and shades are seen plying on various routes but the government is not taking any action to show its writ on the city streets.
An official, requesting anonymity, said the public transporters are not willing to get their buses painted as per official colour code and demanding that the government should pay the painting charges. He said the government lacks political will to take on public transporters because if they are irked they announce strike. As Karachi has no alternative public transport system like Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) the government cannot afford public transporters of Karachi going on strike. He said efforts are under way to settle the issue amicably.
